The Sports Illustrated article that put the final nail in the coffin of hypocrisy that was Jim Tressel’s career

Sports Illustrated hastened Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel’s eventual demise with this investigative piece, which came out just hours after Tressel resigned on Memorial Day.

That’s not a coincidence.

Adding: This excellent analysis by Deadspin on why Tressel is the symptom, not the disease hurting college football. I agree that the work in SI is good journalism, but it aims at the wrong target.

SI needs to focus on what’s wrong with college football’s perverted money scheme that rewards coaches, administrators and schools over players. Or as South Park called it, slavery.

Congrats to my Ohio Bobcats for being invited to R+L Carriers bowl

My Ohio University Bobcats have accepted a bid to play in the R+L Carriers Bowl against Troy in New Orleans on Dec. 18. It is the second bowl game in a row for the team and the fourth since Frank Solich took over as coach. I went to Solich’s first OU bowl game, in Mobile, Ala., and wrote about it here. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend this one because of a schedule conflict. FYI: The R+L Carriers Bowl will be played in the Louisiana Super Dome on a Saturday night with an 9 pm kickoff, which means everyone will be completely sober.

I don’t care that the bowl is sponsored by a company I have never heard of (turns out it provides trucking freight and logistics) or that I had to look up where Troy is located (Alabama.) Congrats to my Bobcats. You are no longer a national disgrace and are actually a point of pride for alumni like myself. Now let’s go beat up a mascot — bowl game style!

Thanks to my friend Jim for posting this link on Facebook to Joel Hawksley’s photos from last weekend’s Ohio University football win over Miami. Hawksley is a photographer for Ohio University’s athletic department, and he has published a photo gallery on his site that walks readers through what he does on game day. Hawksley has wonderful access. I love that at least one guy in the locker room wore a Muck Fiami shirt under his jersey. Go Bobcats!
